Assistant Director of Photography Irwin Thompson joined The Dallas Morning News as a photojournalist in April of 1990. Before coming to Dallas, he was a staff photographer for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the Monroe News-Star.
Mr. Thompson has received numerous awards, including recognitions from The Texas Associated Press, the Louisiana Associated Press, the Texas Headliners, the Press Club of Dallas Katie Award and the National Press Photographers Association. Irwin’s photographs have been published in Time Magazine, People Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Sports Illustrated, US News & World Report, National Geographic, Life Magazine, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times.
In 2006, Irwin was among a team of eight Dallas Morning News photojournalists that won the coveted 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography for chronicling the gripping images of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Thompson was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and grew up in nearby DeRidder. He graduated in 1984 from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a B.A. degree in photojournalism.
